About
I was born and raised in the coastal town of Oostende in Belgium. And although I travelled a lot, until recently I have always lived there. At the end of 2006 my wife and I moved to Toronto, Canada.
From childhood I have been what’s referred to ‘as a handful’ and I do believe that is partly because of my creative side, or fantasy if you like. Everyday life was just too boring, so why wouldn’t I make it more interesting with making up stories?
Although I always liked drawing as a child, I never took any courses or went to an art academy. I would probably never have finished them anyway.
But somehow, at the back of my mind, I always found the need to write or paint. Until now I never gave it the attention it needed. It is part of who I am and I have now come to accept that more. Moreover I’m making changes in my life so I can fully develop my creative skills and see where it will take me.
Being autodidact has it advantages I believe. Searching for ways to express oneself without boundaries can make up in the most surprising way for the lack of technical knowledge. Through the years I’ve experimented with art in many different ways and although influenced by what I saw around me, I followed my own path. Nowadays I find myself looking more often to the ‘masters’ of both the written and visual arts in order to learn.
For the last nine years I have been working fulltime for Greenpeace. Needless to say, working for an organisation like Greenpeace has influenced me and my creative output a lot. But, although faced daily with the beauty of this planet, and also the destruction of it, I try not to focus too much on environmental topics when I paint or write. There are so many more areas to explore, and fantasy is limitless.
